Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Wednesday described the late Emurua Dikir MP Johanna Ng’eno as one of Kenya’s most misunderstood leaders, a man whose brilliance was often concealed behind his rugged political style.

Speaking during the lawmaker’s requiem mass at African Gospel Church Karen on March 4, 2026, Murkomen said Ng’eno’s intellect and academic journey were deeply underrated because he rarely showcased them publicly.

According to the CS, many Kenyans only interacted with Ng’eno’s fiery public persona, not the deeply knowledgeable thinker he was in private.

Murkomen noted that Ng’eno was a product of Maseno School, studied for his first degree abroad in Kief, completed another locally, and eventually pursued a master’s degree, achievements he quietly kept away from political theatrics.

“The more I spent time with Ng’eno, the more I realised how underrated he truly was,” Murkomen said. “He carried a wealth of knowledge, but because he didn’t parade his academic cards, many assumed he lacked depth.”

Murkomen explained that Ng’eno’s intimate engagement with the Emurua Dikir community; often in a casual, grassroots tone, led many to mistake his simplicity for intellectual weakness.

He said the late MP deliberately chose a political style that connected directly with his constituents, even if it meant being misjudged at the national level.

“Because of the way he mingled with his people and the brand of politics he embraced, we misread him,” Murkomen admitted. “But once you sat down with him, you discovered a man with a sharp mind and a deep understanding of issues.”

Murkomen’s remarks offered a rare glimpse into the private side of Ng’eno – not as a controversial political figure, but as a thoughtful leader whose academic depth and analytical mind were overshadowed by public perception.

His tribute reframed the late MP’s legacy, casting him as a leader whose brilliance was hidden in plain sight and whose intellectual contributions may only now be fully appreciated.
