Kenyan Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has again caused a buzz on social media after making a public promise of what he intends to do with the nation’s beer sector if he ever becomes the president.
In a social media statement, the outspoken MP lamented the importation of liquor into Kenya, claiming that a majority of what is drunk here is fake and that as a people, it should opt to brewing its own brands.
“When I am president, all liquor will be brewed in Kenya and not imported. We drink fake liquor ni God anatusaidia tu,” Salasya claimed.
Salasya proceeded to contrast Kenya’s case with that of Ethiopia, where he had said that such popular international products as Heineken are being brewed locally, employing people and offering consumers original products.
“Kenya tunakunywa Heineken kutoka South Africa but for Ethiopia, Heineken is brewed in Ethiopia creating job opportunities and is so original. Heineken ya hapa bale iko lakini ya Kenya is zero,” he had added.
His statement has evoked varied reactions from Kenyans on social media. While some praised his utterance on domestic production and job creation, arguing that it would transform the economy and ensure better quality in goods, others took his words in a lighthearted manner, inferring the MP may have uttered the statement in a relaxed environment.
