Juja MP George Koimburi has proposed that the National Assembly set aside two hours in each sitting for Members of Parliament to debate in their mother tongues, including Kikuyu.
He said the move is aimed at promoting inclusivity and cultural pride within the House.
Speaking on Tuesday, March 17, Koimburi indicated he plans to table a motion seeking parliamentary approval for the proposal and push for its adoption.
Under the current constitutional framework, parliamentary proceedings are conducted in English, Kiswahili, and Kenyan Sign Language, with English taking precedence in the event of inconsistencies in legislation.
It remains unclear whether the proposed changes will secure the support required for implementation.
This development came after Koimburi spoke after the release of 22 members of the Mihiriga Kenda Muiyuru group who had been held for three days at Kibii Police Station in Juja.
The members had been accused of engaging in illegal activities, including female genital mutilation (FGM), but the claims were not substantiated, and they were released on free bond without being produced in court.
