MMUST Denies Issuing Fake Degrees as Government Orders Probe

The Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has denied issuing degrees to those who have not studied at the institution.

The institution reacted to claims made by Mukhisa Kituyi, who claimed that some of the names in the previous graduating class list did not belong to real students.

During a radio interview on March 31, Mukhisa said: “This issue shows there is something seriously wrong in the higher education system in this country. I have evidence to show you that some of those people listed as having graduated from MMUST have never been admitted to MMUST.”

The university has since denied the claims in a press statement issued on Thursday.

The university said it has very strict rules in place regarding graduations.

“Before any student is allowed to graduate, they must go through a rigorous process from the time they are admitted, attend classes, sit for examinations, and finally have clearance from the relevant academic organs.”

The university said it has some students who study under the Open and Distance Learning mode, meaning they are not always at the campus.

The government has also intervened in the matter. The education CS, Mr. Julius Ogamba, has asked the Commission for University Education (CUE) to investigate the matter and ascertain if all the students who were listed as graduating were properly admitted and if they had the necessary qualifications for the course they were undertaking.

The outcome of the investigation will shed more light on the case and clear all the issues raised by the public.
