Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has raised a public discussion again after he released an emotional and touching message following a distress call from his daughter. According to Sonko, the call left him shaken, describing his daughter’s voice as “trembling” and her spirit “broken,” something no parent would ever want to witness or experience in life.
Sonko said he acted immediately, propelled by the instinct of a protective parent. The incident made him reflect deeply on the reality many young Kenyans face behind closed doors: harassment, violence, and emotional pain that often goes unseen and unspoken.
He wanted to know: “If my own daughter can face harassment in her own home, what about the countless young women and men in Kenya who suffer silently, with nobody to defend them?”
The outspoken leader went ahead and addressed the challenges of marriage, saying that though relationships go through “storms and sunshine,” there is a clear line that must never be crossed. When disagreements escalate into violence, Sonko says, the foundation of any union is destroyed.
In a powerful message to young couples, Sonko called on partners to choose peace over rage, communication over confrontation, and introspection over impulsive anger.
“Violence doesn’t solve anything, it just destroys the heart, the home, and the future,” he stressed.
