Lewa Safari Marathon is back after a one-year-hiatus and about 1, 400 participants are expected tomorrow at the Lewa conservancy in Meru County.
The 25th edition sponsored by Safaricom is themed ‘Connecting Generations Through 25 Years of Conservation’.
Last year’s competition was cancelled due to the nationwide Gen Z protests.
The 2023 women’s champion Mercy Kwambai will defend her title.
Two years ago Kwambai and Philip Kigen emerged the winners of the competition held at the Lewa Conservancy in Isiolo County.
Kigen posted 2:19:06 time to win the men 42km race ahead of John Mitei (02:21:23) and Isaak Koech (02:22:37) who settled in second and third positions respectively.
Kwambai won the women’s race in a time of 2:48:35, followed by Zeddy Jerop in 2:52:54, and third-placed Fridah Leropa with a time of 3:04:32.
“The Lewa Safari Marathon embodies the true spirit of Safaricom’s purpose of transforming lives by driving meaningful impact to the community. As one of the key partners, we are proud of the impact this marathon has had over the past 25 years, a journey we have walked together, especially as we also celebrate our silver jubilee this year,” Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said.
The organisers are targeting to raise Sh140 million for wildlife conservation efforts.
“As we mark the 25th edition of the Lewa Safari Marathon, we are proud of the great preparations that have gone into making this a truly special event. We have implemented enhanced safety measures, route marking, community engagement, and environmental conservation protocols. Every detail has been carefully considered. This year’s event is not just a race, it’s a celebration of 25 years of impact, unity, and purpose in conservation efforts across Kenya,” Lewa Wildlife CEO Mike Watson said.
Over KES 400 million has been invested in the direct protection of endangered species, other wildlife, and their habitats.
