Actor Malcolm Jamal Warner, who rose to fame for playing Theo Huxtable in The Cosby Show, has died at the age of 54. He died by drowning, according to Costa Rican authorities.The incident took place last Sunday, July 20, at Playa Cocles beach in the Limon province of Costa Rica. Warner had been swimming between 2:00 and 2:30 p.m. when a strong current pulled him out from the shore. People on the beach saw the struggle and immediately helped bring him back to shore.

Red Cross emergency teams from Costa Rica arrived promptly after the 9-1-1 call. Two men were attended to by them — one was taken to a nearby clinic in critical condition. Sadly, Warner failed to respond to CPR and was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was subsequently taken to a morgue for a postmortem, which confirmed that he passed away due to drowning.Warner was best known for his portrayal of Theo, the son of Cliff and Clair Huxtable, on the television show The Cosby Show. The show itself lasted from 1984 to 1992 and was among the most viewed family programs of its time. Warner even gained an Emmy Award nomination in 1986 for his performance.

He later continued to act in several other shows, some of which are Malcolm & Eddie with Eddie Griffin, and Reed Between the Lines with Tracee Ellis Ross. More recently, he played Dr. AJ Austin, a cardiothoracic surgeon, in the TV drama The Resident.Warner was a poet and spoken-word artist, even winning a Grammy Award, in addition to being an actor. He was a director and producer, and his artistry was demonstrated in many forms during his lifetime.

He was born in Jersey City in 1970 and started acting as a child under the influence of his mother, Pamela Warner. Though famous, Warner never exposed his personal life. He is survived by a wife and daughter but preferred not to share their names with the world.Actors and fans have taken to social media to pay their respects and give reminiscences. He was called kind, humble, and a good role model, especially for young Black actors in the 1980s and 1990s, by many.
