Machakos Nurses End Strike After Deal With County

The Machakos County nurses have called off their strike after the union and the county government deal.

The strike, which was in its second week was suspended for 90 days following talks between the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) and the county government officials. Nurses have been instructed to resume duty within 48 hours.

KNUN Machakos branch secretary Michael Saka said the county had agreed to clear pending loan deductions and implement the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) salary review by September 30.

Other commitments include promoting nurses who have served more than seven years within two weeks, raising allowances from Ksh10,000 to Ksh25,000, and fully implementing the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Saka also assured members that no nurse would face disciplinary action for taking part in the strike.

County secretary Muya Ndambuki stated that further promotions are lined up in the 2026/2027 financial year. He also clarified that the 500 nurses’ vacancies recently advertised are a routine recruitment exercise and not part of the strike.

The deal is expected to reduce pressure on public hospitals, which have been overwhelmed since the start of the strike.
