Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo decried the cold-blooded killing of veteran lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, who was gunned down on Tuesday evening in a drive-by attack on Magadi Road in Nairobi.
Mbobu, a practising lawyer since more than 30 years, was fired at around 7:30 p.m. outside the Galleria Brookside complex by a motorbike rider assailant who escaped after shooting him.
Odhiambo, in a statement, called the attack a “premeditated assassination” and referred to it as a black day for the bar.
This horrible accident denied the country a respected voice of the High Court. “The Law Society of Kenya expresses in shock and outrage at the avoidable killing of Mr. Mbobu,” she stated.
Odhiambo also sent his condolences to colleagues, friends, and relatives of the deceased lawyer for recognizing his decades of service in politics and the law.
Mbobu was the chairman of the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal and a lecturer at the University of Nairobi, guiding young lawyers.
His law books on evidence are still widely utilized.
The LSK President warned that the rising trend of lawyer violence is significantly eroding the profession.
“Lawyers cannot do their work in an atmosphere of fear of persecution. We want the criminals traced and brought to book,” she added.
Odhiambo urged the DCI to make rapid and successful investigations, adding a delay would question the government’s enthusiasm to defend its citizens.
The wanton reining of crime on our streets is an abrogation of the freedom and rule of law that make Kenya a democracy. The security agencies must act fast to halt this evil,” she said.
She noted that Mbobu’s murder should be an eye-opener to the government to address rising insecurity and offer security to professionals and citizens in general.
