The Kenya We Want, a civil society organization committed to promoting national unity, accountability, and ethical governance, strongly condemns the inflammatory and unsubstantiated remarks made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during a media interview on [7th April 2025].

His statements, which maliciously portrayed the President of Kenya as a “self-centered leader with no national interest at heart,” are not only baseless but also a blatant violation of the oath of secrecy he swore to uphold as a former public official.

Of grave concern are Mr. Gachagua’s reckless allegations that “Kenya is assisting rebels to form governments in neighbouring countries.” Such claims risk damaging Kenya’s diplomatic relations with its regional partners and undermining decades of collaborative peacebuilding efforts.

The Kenya We Want views these remarks as a calculated attempt to sow discord, destabilize national cohesion, and tarnish Kenya’s international reputation.

“Kenya’s stability and prosperity depend on responsible leadership and a media landscape that prioritizes truth and national unity. Mr. Gachagua’s actions betray the trust bestowed upon him by the people of Kenya. We demand accountability—not just for him, but for any institution complicit in undermining our nation’s dignity. The Communications Authority and security agencies must act swiftly to avert further harm.” said Kidaha Vincent, National Coordinator of The Kenya We Want, stated

CALL FOR INVESTIGATION AND ACCOUNTABILITY

We urge security agencies, particularly the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), to immediately summon Mr. Gachagua to record a formal statement and clarify his motives for disseminating falsehoods that jeopardize Kenya’s foreign relations.

Public officials—past or present—must be held to the highest standards of integrity, and those who abuse their platform to spread divisive rhetoric must face legal consequences.

Furthermore, we express deep concern over the role of certain media outlets in amplifying unverified and sensitive claims without due regard for professional journalistic ethics.

The Kenya We Want calls on the Communications Authority of Kenya to investigate stations that prioritize sensationalism over national interest and to enforce compliance with the Code of Conduct for Media Practitioner. Platforms enabling the spread of harmful misinformation must be held accountable.0
