Kenya’s media fraternity is in mourning following the passing of veteran broadcaster and Spice FM host Edward Kwach. The beloved radio personality passed away on the night of Monday, April 28, 2025, while undergoing treatment for meningitis.
The sad news was confirmed on Tuesday morning by Michael Okwiri, former Airtel Vice President, in a heartfelt message. “It is with profound sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved son and brother, Carey. He died last night while receiving treatment for meningitis,” Okwiri shared. “Carey touched many lives through his voice and presence on the airwaves, becoming a trusted and familiar companion to listeners across the nation.”
Okwiri fondly remembered Kwach not only for his signature voice and quick wit but also for his impeccable music taste. “His passing is a tremendous loss to all who knew him personally and to the many more who felt connected to him through his work,” he added.
Tributes poured in from fans and media personalities alike. Classic FM’s Maina Kageni recalled the profound impact Kwach had on his own broadcasting journey. “One of the best things that ever happened to me was meeting Edward Carey Francis Kwach. His energy and drive were contagious,” he said. “Working with him on Kiss 100 alongside Arjun Vidyarthi and later Cess Mutungi was a masterclass in broadcasting.”
Maina didn’t hold back his praise, calling Kwach “the greatest radio personality Kenya has ever produced.” He concluded his tribute with a poignant farewell: “Edward, I’ve said this many times — you were the greatest. I can only celebrate your legacy. Go well.”
Until his passing, Kwach was the host of Spice Drive on Spice FM, airing weekdays from 3 PM to 7 PM. Over the years, he also worked with notable media organisations including Radio Africa Group, Urban Radio in Kisumu, and Nation Media Group.
Edward Kwach’s legacy will live on in the hearts of listeners who grew up hearing his voice — comforting, entertaining, and unmistakably authentic.
May he rest in peace.
