A heavy downpour on Sunday night left Nairobi’s Central Business District submerged, with clogged drainage systems unable to cope with the high volume of rainwater.
Motorists and pedestrians were left stranded for hours, with many expressing frustrations over what they called poor leadership by the Nairobi County government.
Lawyer and politician Willis Otieno took to social media to criticise Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, blaming him for the persistent flooding issues in the city centre.
Posting on his X account, Otieno accused Governor Sakaja of neglecting basic infrastructure, particularly the city’s drainage systems.
“Every time it rains, Nairobi CBD turns into a swamp. Sakaja will do five years in office without unblocking even a drainage trench. A whole Governor reduced to vibes, concerts and hashtags, while the capital city drowns in mud. Leadership ya TikTok, not City Hall,” he wrote.

Otieno argued that the county government has prioritised entertainment events and social media visibility over addressing Nairobi’s recurring drainage problems, leaving residents to contend with flooded, impassable streets whenever it rains.
