In a bold late-night operation, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) raided Pulse Lounge, a well-known entertainment venue along Lang’ata Road in Nairobi. During the raid, authorities seized 16 shisha bongs, over 100 cartons of assorted shisha flavors, and a charcoal burner, marking another significant step in their fight against the illegal shisha trade in Kenya. Two individuals were arrested during the operation and are set to face charges in court, demonstrating NACADA’s unwavering commitment to enforcing the country’s 2017 ban on shisha.

James Koskey, NACADA’s Director of Compliance and Enforcement, spoke strongly at the scene, issuing a stern warning to shisha operators. He emphasized that the law regarding shisha is clear and that any efforts to defy the ban would result in decisive action.

Koskey’s comments came after a recent ruling from the Court of Appeal, which upheld the legality of the shisha ban, rejecting an appeal from shisha traders who attempted to overturn it. The court’s decision further bolstered NACADA’s resolve to intensify their crackdown on the illegal trade, which is seen as a threat to public health due to the significant risks posed by shisha smoking.

Shisha, smoked through a water pipe, is linked to a variety of severe health issues, including respiratory diseases, cancer, and nicotine addiction. Despite its popularity, particularly among young adults, the Kenyan government has remained firm in its stance against shisha use, prioritizing the health and well-being of its citizens. NACADA’s ongoing efforts aim to eliminate shisha from the market, with the agency continuing to target entertainment venues, bars, and other establishments involved in the trade.

As the two suspects await their day in court, NACADA is urging the public to join the fight against the illegal shisha trade by reporting any suspicious activities. With strong enforcement from authorities and public support, Kenya is sending a clear message: shisha has no place in the country.
