The Kenya University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) has successfully performed its first two kidney transplant surgeries, marking a major milestone in the country’s journey towards expanding specialized healthcare services.

The transplants, carried out on May 7th and 8th, 2025, were performed in collaboration with a team of experienced kidney specialists from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), who are mentoring KUTRRH’s medical team as it builds internal capacity for advanced renal care.

Both donors and recipients are reported to be recovering well following the surgeries.

During a press briefing , the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, lauded the achievement, describing it as a game-changer for the country’s health sector.

“This milestone reflects years of preparation, investment in specialized equipment, and international training of medical staff. It’s a proud moment for Kenya and a significant step toward reducing dependency on foreign treatment for renal patients,” said Dr. Oluga.

He was joined by KUTRRH Acting CEO, Ms. Zeinab Gura, and Chairperson of the Board of Directors, Senator Kembi Gitura, who reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to growing into a regional centre of excellence in renal care.
