The electrification project of Galana Kulalu that cost KSh 2.9 billion is expected to be completed by the middle of next year. This will be a major milestone for the multi-billion-shilling Galana Kulalu Food Security Project.

The Senate Committee on Energy chaired by Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga and the members of the committee, visited the Baolala Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) substation in Malindi, Kilifi County. They appreciated the government’s effort to provide power to the large-scale agricultural scheme.

Oburu stated that the work done on the site was commendable; he considered it an essential move for improving energy access and a significant step towards achieving national food security goals. Still, he advised the contractor not to forget the local communities during this project and urged him to ensure that development is inclusive.

“At the beginning, Corporate Social Responsibility and community power connections were not considered. We are urging the contractor to share the good news with the communities around so that they too will reap the fruits of this project,” said Senator Oburu.

So, the electrification project, after the installation of all necessary equipment, will be instrumental in elevating agricultural productivity, domesticating industrial growth, and contributing to the food security of the coast and the neighboring counties.

The Galana Kulalu Food Security Project is still the main one out of the several major Kenya initiatives to address the problem of food security by the country.
