The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has clarified that salaried Kenyans can still file their annual tax returns even if they have not received P9 forms from their employers.

In a statement shared on X, formerly Twitter, the tax authority advised employees without the document to use the “ITR for Employment Income Only” option available on the iTax portal.

The clarification comes as many taxpayers rush to beat the June 30 filing deadline, with concerns growing among employees whose employers are yet to issue the important tax document.

“Please note you can use the ITR for Employment Income Only option on iTax if you do not have a P9 form,” KRA said while responding to a taxpayer seeking guidance online.

In most cases, the P9 form is issued by employers at the end of the financial year and provides information regarding an employee’s annual income, PAYE tax, pension deductions, and other statutory deductions such as the Housing Levy.

The form is often used to file returns since it is useful in declaring one’s income and confirming the tax that was deducted from the income throughout the year.

Nevertheless, KRA has announced that the taxpayers can file returns even if they do not have the P9 forms since they can provide information regarding their annual income based on their individual records.

It is hoped that the decision will assist many individuals avoid penalties due to late filing of the returns since their employers have not yet issued the forms.

Individuals can file their returns without P9 forms by logging into the iTax system using the KRA PIN and password, clicking on “File Returns,” and selecting “Income Tax-Resident Individual.”

They can then click on “ITR for Employment Income Only,” enter the required income and deduction information, and submit the returns.

KRA has been urging Kenyans to file their returns earlier to avoid penalties as the deadline draws near.
