Managing Director of Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), Capt. William K. Ruto, is currently admitted in hospital after an accident in which he and other family members were caught up in Taita Taveta.

The authority has disclosed  in a statement released today revealing that the incident resulted in death of Capt. Ruto’s daughter.

“We are deeply saddened to announce that our Chief Executive Officer, Capt. William K. Ruto, was involved in a tragic road accident yesterday evening while travelling with his family,” KPA said.

The organization further stated that the death of his daughter has put their family in great mourning.

Capt. Ruto survived the accident and is currently in stable condition. Other family members are also said to be safe and receiving medical care.

KPA said it is working closely with police and other authorities to establish what caused the accident and that more details will be shared once investigations are complete.

Emergency service providers and leaders from Coast region were among the first responders to offer their condolences.

The accident comes at a time when several road crashes have been reported across the country as many Kenyans travel for the Easter holidays.

In one of the incidents, at least 11 people have died following a crash along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway near Kariandusi in Gilgil. The accident involved a 14-seater matatu that crashed into a stalled trailer in the early hours of Saturday.

According to Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander Winston Mwakio, the trailer had developed mechanical problems and stopped on the road before the matatu, which was reportedly speeding, rammed into it.

In yet another incident, a report was made by the Kenya Red Cross Society that an accident occurred in the Tunnel area in Fort Tenan in Kericho County that involved two buses and two lorries transporting a total of 66 passengers.

The number of injuries from the incident totaled to 20, out of which five received serious injuries that necessitated them to be referred to a higher-level hospital while others including six children are receiving treatment at the sub-county hospital.
