The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) will release results for Grade 4 and 5 school-based assessments on May 29, after directing schools across the country to submit learners’ scores by the same date.
In a notice issued on Wednesday, the exams body said all schools must administer, mark, and upload results for the assessments through the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal within the set timeline.
“Schools will be expected to administer the projects and practicals, score them, and upload the assessment outcomes of all learners within the stipulated time,” KNEC said.
The assessments are among those carried out under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) system in that they emphasize continuous assessment of the competencies of the learners through examinations only at the end of their learning period. For the grade four and five learners, such assessments will help gauge their progress as they approach the grade six assessment.
As per KNEC, schools have had access to the assessment tools from March 2 where the headteachers were expected to log into the portal in guiding the assessment exercise.
Some of the disciplines included in the assessments are Science and Technology, Creative Arts and Sports, and Agriculture. The schools have been encouraged to use whatever is available to carry out practicals within the localities or improvising wherever possible.
All record books together with other evidences from the assessments are expected to be kept in safe custody by the headteachers as per directions from KNEC.
“All records and evidence from the assessment should be kept safe by head teachers,” said the body.
For assistance during the assessment exercise, KNEC developed a user manual detailing how scores are awarded and uploaded. Those schools having problems are expected to liaise with the Sub-County Directors of Education.
This release was scheduled at a time when there are already growing tensions within the education sector due to protests from teachers whose salaries are still outstanding.
