KMTC announces new scholarships for specialised kidney care training

Health professionals interested in specialising in the care of patients with kidney-related conditions are presented with another opportunity after the Kenya Medical Training College announced the roll-out of the next round of scholarship applications in the region dedicated to urology and nephrology training.

In a press release on Thursday, the KMTC Chief Executive Officer, Kelly Oluoch, revealed that the scholarship applications are part of the East Africa Centre of Excellence in Urology and Nephrology (EACE-UN), which supports nine higher diploma courses and one short course aimed at enhancing kidney-related services in the country.

The courses include the Higher Diploma in Medical Engineering, which covers specialisations in Dialysis Equipment, Therapeutic Equipment, and Diagnostic Equipment. Other courses are the Higher Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery in Nephrology, Higher Diploma in Nephrology Nursing, Renal Nutrition in Nutrition and Dietetics, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Occupational Therapy, Renal Pharmacy, and a short course in Renal Transplant Nursing.

KMTC observed that the scholarship will cover the cost of the tuition as well as a stipend to cater to the student’s living expenses. Applicants should first secure an unconditional admission letter for the selected course of study before they can apply for the scholarship.

Applicants can apply up to March 15, 2026. They should apply via the KMTC admissions portal. During the application process, the student should attach a handwritten essay of no more than 200 words that describes why the student deserves the scholarship as well as how the student can use the skills to benefit the communities they come from.

The courses offered in the scholarship will take two years to complete on a full-time basis. They will be offered to practicing health professionals in the respective fields. Some of the courses offered include nurses, clinical officers, biomedical engineers, nutritionists, laboratory officers, occupational therapists, pharmaceutical technologists, among others.

Oluoch observed that the scholarship will be offered to county employees, KMTC employees, as well as those with at least three years of work experience. The scholarship will be offered as long as there is fund availability. Students can get more information via the college’s official admissions email.

This scholarship comes at a time when there is an increased demand for specialized kidney care services.
