Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge finished 17th in the New York Marathon, clocking 2:14:36 in what could mark the final chapter of his storied running career.

The two-time world record holder and double Olympic champion was competing in the Big Apple for the first time, on a day that saw Kenyan athletes dominate, sweeping the podium in both the men’s and women’s races.

Ahead of the event, the 41-year-old had hinted that the race might be his last competitive appearance, suggesting that a major announcement would follow shortly after.

“There are beautiful programmes that I have in place for next year, so Sunday will be that time,” Kipchoge said before the race.

Despite finishing outside the leading pack, Kipchoge maintained his trademark composure and gratitude, reflecting on his long and illustrious career.

“I am happy to still run at the age of 41 and to compete with young people in their 20s. I’m grateful that my muscles still carry me through training and racing,” he said.

Kipchoge, widely regarded as the greatest marathon runner of all time, has won two Olympic gold medals (Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2021) and twice shattered the marathon world record — most recently with a time of 2:01:09 in 2022.

His participation in New York also completed his set of appearances in all six World Marathon Majors, a feat that underlines a career defined by endurance, excellence, and unmatched consistency.
