Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced a major government investment aimed at ending decades of water scarcity in Mbeere North, in what is being seen as a strategic move ahead of the November 27 by election.
Speaking during a people’s forum in Kirie, Muminji Ward, Kindiki said the government has already committed KSh 1.3 billion to reticulate water from the Kiambere Dam, with an additional KSh 2 billion expected to be sourced to expand supply across Mbeere North and neighbouring constituencies.
According to the Deputy President, the programme is part of a wider national plan to ensure every household has access to clean and reliable water.
Residents who attended the forum welcomed the announcement but said they hoped the projects would not stall after the polls. Margaret Njura, a 64 year old farmer from Karambari, said communities in the area have struggled with water shortages for generations.
“We have suffered for years without water. If these dams come through, our children will not grow up carrying jerricans like we did,” she said.
The forum also took a political turn after residents declared support for UDA candidate Leo Wamuthende, who is seeking to clinch the seat left vacant by the recent by election call. The crowd repeatedly chanted “Form ni Leo” as leaders urged the community to back the ruling party.
Boda boda riders and youth groups said they want a representative who can work closely with the national government to fast track ongoing development projects. Andrew Muturi, one of the riders, said voters are focused on candidates who can deliver tangible results.
The Mbeere North by election has drawn national attention, with analysts viewing it as a test of the ruling party’s influence in Embu County. Kindiki’s visit and the multibillion shilling pledge underline the stakes for the government as it seeks to retain the seat.
