DCI has summoned two political figures in Makueni County in connection with the violent protests that rocked the area on June 25.

Nzaui-Kilili-Kalamba Ward MCA Francis Mutuku and former Machakos County Executive Committee Member Urbanus Wambua were ordered to appear at the Makueni DCI offices for questioning.

Authorities have listed the two as persons of interest in relation to alleged cases of arson and malicious damage to property during the protests.

The notice, invoking Section 52(1) of the National Police Service Act, asked both leaders to report to Makueni Police Station on Tuesday, July 2 at 10am, failure to comply would lead legal action.

MCA Mutuku confirmed receipt of the summons but denied knowledge of any wrongdoing. “Yes, I have received the summons. They are talking about malicious damage to property but I do not know much about that”, he said.

Makueni county witnessed horrific scenes with Gen Z protests taking over, with widespread vandalism and battles between protesters and police.

The summons came just a day after two youth leaders affiliated with the Democracy for Citizens’ Party, linked to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, were also targeted.

One of them, Peter Kawanjiru, was allegedly taken by officers on Monday night, while another, Wanjiku Thiga, was arrested on Tuesday.

As of Monday, the DCI reported 485 arrests tied to the protests, with 448 already charged and 37 still under investigation.
