Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has inspected the progress of several development projects in Maua town, Meru County, including the expansion of Nyambene Sub-County Hospital and construction of a modern fresh produce market.
Kindiki was accompanied by Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Eric Mugaa during the inspection, which also included a public participation exercise with residents of Maua.
The expansion of Nyambene Sub-County Hospital is expected to strengthen the provision of medical services in the region by improving access to emergency and life-saving care.
“The expansion of Nyambene Hospital will enhance the provision of life-saving medical care, improve community health outcomes, and strengthen emergency response systems. Meanwhile, the construction of the KSh 425 million Maua Fresh Produce Modern Market will provide a dignified trading space for mama mboga, hawkers, and other small-scale traders, enabling them to conduct business and generate income more effectively,”statement read.
The project is also aimed at enhancing community health outcomes and strengthening the hospital’s capacity to respond to medical emergencies.
Kindiki and Mugaa also inspected the construction of the Maua Fresh Produce Modern Market, a project valued at KSh425 million.
The modern market is expected to provide improved trading facilities for mama mboga, hawkers and other small-scale traders, giving them a more organised and dignified environment to conduct business.
During the public engagement, Mugaa highlighted progress on the Maua Sewerage Last Mile Connectivity Project, which is designed to significantly expand access to sewerage services in the town.
According to the Ministry, sewerage connectivity in Maua is expected to increase from the current 20 per cent to 70 per cent once the project is completed.
The project is currently 78 per cent complete and is expected to benefit more than 18,600 residents.
The government says the projects are part of ongoing efforts to improve public infrastructure and living standards through investments in healthcare, sanitation and economic facilities.
