Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to lifting Kenyans out of poverty through the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), citing notable progress in agricultural reforms, market development, and rural electrification.
Speaking during the Kigumo Constituency Economic Empowerment Programme in Murang’a County, Kindiki said the government is focused on boosting household incomes, especially for citizens at the bottom of the economic pyramid.
“We are making significant progress in implementing the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda to increase household incomes for the vast majority of our citizens,” said Kindiki.

He pointed to the success of agricultural sector reforms — including the subsidised fertiliser programme, crackdown on cartels, and stronger cooperative societies — which have led to improved earnings for farmers.
According to Kindiki, coffee prices have reached between Ksh.110 and Ksh.148 per kilogram, the highest in 35 years.
To support small-scale traders such as Mama Mboga, hawkers, and Boda Boda operators, the government is constructing 400 modern markets across the country’s 290 constituencies.
In Murang’a County, 15 markets are already under construction, with another 12 planned.

Additionally, the Deputy President announced a Ksh.1.1 billion electricity expansion initiative in Murang’a County, targeting 16,000 new household connections. Kigumo Constituency alone will benefit from Ksh.122 million worth of new power installations.
“Our goal is to dignify the daily toil of ordinary Kenyans and empower them to participate meaningfully in the country’s economic transformation,” he added.

Kindiki was accompanied by a host of leaders, including Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina, MPs Mary Wamaua (Maragua), Edwin Mugo (Mathioya), and Sabina Chege (Nominated). Other attendees included MCAs, Principal Secretaries Elijah Mwangi (Sports), Alex Wachira (Energy), Betsy Njagi (Fisheries), Mary Muthoni (Public Health), Ann Wang’ombe (Gender), and Senior Presidential Advisor on the Economy Moses Kuria.
