Kenyans are being called upon to actively participate in national discussions aimed at tackling gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide. Beginning Monday, a government-appointed task force will hold a series of public forums across the country to gather views that will inform stronger laws, policies, and institutional responses to GBV.

The Technical Working Group on GBV and Femicide, chaired by former Deputy Chief Justice Dr Nancy Baraza, will lead these public engagements from May 12 to May 28, 2025. The forums will be held in various counties to ensure broad representation and inclusivity in the process.

Monday’s sessions will take place in Taita Taveta, Garissa, Marsabit, Embu, Samburu, Kisumu, and Trans Nzoia. On Tuesday, the group will be in Kirinyaga, Laikipia, and Narok. Wednesday’s forums are scheduled for Mombasa, Isiolo, Kitui, Nyandarua, Nyeri, West Pokot, and Vihiga, while Thursday will cover Meru, Nakuru, Murang’a, and Bomet. The exercise will conclude on Friday with sessions in Kwale, Makueni, Nandi, Kericho, Kakamega, and Nyamira. All forums will begin at 9:00 am.

Dr Baraza has encouraged citizens to take part, stating that every voice matters in shaping a safer and more just society. “We urge Kenyans to participate in this important process. All contributions will be considered in our final recommendations,” she said.

The task force was established by President William Ruto on January 10, 2025, in response to increasing cases of violence against women and girls. Initially given a three-month term, the group’s mandate was extended for an additional two months in April to allow for deeper engagement.
