The Kenyan police officers, who are part of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, have intensified patrols in major towns of the Caribbean country.
In the heightened operation after Kenya sent an additional 217 officers, the officers are now conducting the patrols day and night both on the ground and aerial surveillance through drone technology.
This is to rid Haiti of the armed gangs, led by Jimmy Cherizier alias Barbecue, that have been terrorising the country for years.
Police Superintendent Edwin Kolil said the patrols will continue until total peace returns in Haiti.
Notably, since June 2024, Kenya’s police, in collaboration with officers from Jamaica, Bahamas, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Belize, have made substantial progress in combating criminal gangs.
This led to the reopening of schools and colleges, as well as the reopening of courts on October 2 and 7, 2024, respectively.
Several major criminal gangs have also been destabilised during the mission, including the Delmas 6 Gang, Kraze Barye Gang, and the Gran Griff Gang, which were led by notorious criminals Jimmy Cherizier, Vitel Homme Innocent, and Elan Luckson.
