South African Artist Tyla Laura

South African star Tyla Laura Seethal has reflected on love’s highs and lows on her second album, explaining that music is rooted in African sounds, shaped by global influences.

Tyla said that she created the term because she felt her music could not be placed under just one category. She mentioned her styles also create a unique identity that represents both her background and her generation.

She noted that behind her A-pop music is the idea that in this digital era, generations have been influenced by different cultures from around the world and have had greater exposure.

According to Tyla, A-pop or African Pop, is the music that combine one genre with many different elements.

“Growing up in my era, I was influenced not only by Africa but by the world. My generation was heavily influenced by the world, and I’ve always been interested in incorporating all of that into my artistry,” Tyla said.

She explained that bringing the African rhythm into mainstream will ensure pop remains heritage at the center of her sound. She wants listeners to feel both the familiarity of global pop and the heartbeat of Africa in every track.

“I’m made up of so many different things and I feel like A-pop is a new way to see African music. African music is evolving,” she stated.

Tyla is known for blending Amapiano, Afrobeats, R&B and pop. She has challenged African musicians to produce their music that represents the continent.
