Kenya maintains strong and strategic relations with the European Union (EU) and the European Investment Bank (EIB), a partnership that plays a key role in advancing the country’s energy transition agenda.

Through its Embassy in the Kingdom of Belgium—which also serves as the Mission to the EU—Kenya has continued to benefit from sustained support in implementing major infrastructure and energy initiatives.

One notable example is the Last Mile Connectivity Programme, which aims to expand electricity access in rural and underserved communities.

In a recent statement, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, Alex Wachira, highlighted the deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), pumped hydro storage, and other emerging green technologies.

These innovations are essential for integrating variable renewable sources like solar and wind by storing excess energy generated during the day for use at night, thereby enhancing grid flexibility and reducing reliance on carbon-intensive peaking plants.

“Kenya continues to enjoy cordial relations with the EU and the European Investment Bank, headquartered in Brussels, which have been instrumental in supporting projects such as the Last Mile Connectivity Programme,” said PS Wachira. “Battery Energy Storage Systems and other technologies are helping us make renewable energy more reliable and resilient.”
