The government is seeking funds for water supply works linked to the Mwache Dam project in Kwale County, as it looks to extend water services to parts of Mombasa.

Water Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa visited the project on Tuesday alongside European Investment Bank Director General Andrew McDowell and African Development Bank Kenya Director Anne-Gaël Chapuis.

The team inspected the progress of the dam and held discussions on how to raise money for the next phase of the project.

The planned works include a water treatment plant with the capacity to process 186 million litres a day, as well as pipelines to supply water to Likoni, Changamwe and Nguu Tatu in different parts of Mombasa.

The visit brought together officials from the two development banks, Water Secretary Eng. S.A.O. Alima, Coast Water Works Development Agency Chief Executive Officer Hamoud Mguza, project teams, local administrators and residents.

According to the ministry of water, the project will serve over 1.6 million people through provision of adequate water and helping them deal with challenges associated with climate change.

It should be noted that the downstream works will require further investment to ensure that there is proper treatment and transportation infrastructure put in place to distribute water in the targeted regions through the project.

Speaking during the meeting, Mugaa reiterated that the government was keen on providing its citizens with safe drinking water as well as improved sanitation facilities. He also reiterated the importance of enhancing cooperation with the European Investment Bank and African Development Bank in financing water projects.

The ongoing discussions were about mobilizing funds for the rest of the works, which will determine how water will be treated and distributed to households and others within the regions targeted by the project.
