Kenya has initiated high-level talks with senior Tanzanian officials to address rising concerns over the safety of Kenyan citizens living and working in Tanzania, following last week’s unrest.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi announced that he had a constructive phone discussion with Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo (MP), Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation.

Their conversation focused on ensuring the welfare and protection of Kenyans residing and conducting business across Tanzania.

Mudavadi emphasized Kenya’s commitment to upholding the rights, safety, and dignity of its nationals who contribute significantly to Tanzania’s economy through trade, entrepreneurship, and various professions.

The two leaders also reviewed recent reports of incidents where the rights of some Kenyan nationals were allegedly violated.

“Formal complaints regarding these cases have already been lodged with the Tanzanian authorities for due action,” Mudavadi said. “We agreed that any emerging issues will be resolved through existing diplomatic and consular frameworks, in line with international law and the principles of the East African Community Common Market Protocol.”

He further underscored Kenya and Tanzania’s mutual resolve to reinforce their longstanding friendship—built on respect, cooperation, and a shared vision for deeper regional integration.
