A fire broke out at Moi Girls High School, located in Kibra Constituency, Nairobi County, on Monday evening, January 20, 2025. The blaze, which reportedly began in a multi-storey building on the school premises, triggered a swift response from emergency services.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident at 7:47 PM, dispatching their team to the scene to assist with the situation. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, witnesses at the scene described seeing flames emanating from one of the dormitories.

By 8:30 PM, the Nairobi County fire brigade had successfully contained the fire. The blaze was confined to one dormitory, and no casualties were reported. All students were safely evacuated from the building, and the fire was completely under control by 11:01 PM, according to the Kenya Red Cross.

In a statement issued later, the Kenya Red Cross expressed their commitment to supporting the affected students and staff. The agency announced plans to provide essential supplies, including 200 mattresses, 400 blankets, and 200 dignity kits to the school that evening. Additionally, the Red Cross dispatched a team of counselors to offer psychosocial support to those impacted by the incident.

โ€œThe situation has been contained, and all students are accounted for. Kenya Red Cross will provide beddings and dignity kits to those in need and continue offering psychosocial support to students and staff,โ€ the statement read.

The school and emergency services are now focused on assessing the full extent of the damage, and further details are expected as investigations into the cause of the fire progress.
