The National Police Service (NPS) has received assistive devices worth over KSh 13 million from Kenya Reinsurance Corporation Limited (Kenya Re) to support 73 police officers who sustained injuries in the line of duty.

The donation was handed over at a ceremony held at the National Police College Embakasi ‘A’ Campus in Nairobi. The assistive devices, including wheelchairs, hearing aids, white canes, and orthopedic shoes, were customized to meet the specific needs of the recipients.

This initiative marks the second phase of Kenya Re’s support program, following last year’s donation led by Group Managing Director Dr. Hillary Wachinga.Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja expressed gratitude to Kenya Re for its continued support, noting that the assistive devices would enhance the mobility and independence of affected officers.

He also announced the establishment of a dedicated office at NPS Headquarters and the NPS Hospital to handle claims and support for officers with disabilities.“Police officers face numerous occupational hazards, and it is our duty to ensure that those injured while serving the country are well cared for,” IG Kanja stated. “These officers are our heroes, and they deserve every form of support to lead dignified lives.”Dr. Wachinga reaffirmed Kenya Re’s commitment to supporting the police service, emphasizing that security is a key pillar of economic stability.

He also revealed plans to extend support beyond assistive devices to include mental health programs for officers.“The biggest disability is not physical but mental. We recognize the difficult conditions officers work under, and we are exploring ways to support their psychological well-being,” Dr. Wachinga said.

Kenya Re has pledged to continue partnering with the NPS in future initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of police officers, both during and after their service.
