Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing a sustainable blue economy through stronger international cooperation and practical action among Commonwealth nations.

Speaking during the Commonwealth Ocean Ministers’ Roundtable held on the sidelines of the 11th edition of the Our Ocean Conference, Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Hassan Ali Joho said Kenya remains focused on turning global commitments into tangible benefits for communities that depend on ocean resources.

The roundtable was co-hosted by Kenya and the Commonwealth Secretariat and brought together ministers and stakeholders to discuss strategies for promoting sustainable use of marine resources and strengthening ocean governance.

“I commend the Commonwealth Secretariat for its steadfast leadership of the Blue Charter and its unwavering support to member states in advancing our common aspirations,”Joho said.

Joho noted that Kenya serves as co-champion of the Commonwealth Blue Charter Action Group on the Sustainable Blue Economy alongside Antigua and Barbuda, a role that underscores the country’s leadership in championing ocean sustainability.

He emphasized that a thriving ocean economy is not only critical for environmental conservation but also serves as a key driver of economic growth and sustainable development.

According to the Cabinet Secretary, sectors such as fisheries, maritime transport, coastal tourism, marine renewable energy and the protection of marine ecosystems have immense potential to create jobs and improve livelihoods while safeguarding the environment.

Joho commended the Commonwealth Secretariat for its leadership in implementing the Blue Charter and supporting member states in pursuing shared goals for sustainable ocean management.

He called for continued collaboration among governments, development partners and stakeholders to ensure future generations benefit from healthy and productive oceans.

The roundtable was attended by several international dignitaries, including former United States Secretary of State John Kerry, founder of the Our Ocean Conference.

Blue Economy and Fisheries Principal Secretary Betsy Njagi also participated in the discussions.
