The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning for strong winds expected to affect 15 counties starting this Friday through to Sunday.
The counties likely to be impacted include: Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale.
During a TV interview Dr. David Gikungu, Director of the Meteorological Service, attributed the anticipated strong southerly winds to intensified ocean currents in the Indian Ocean.
“Winds exceeding 30 knots are expected across the Coast, South-Eastern Lowlands, and North-Western Kenya on Friday. These are forecast to intensify to over 35 knots by Saturday and Sunday,” Dr. Gikungu said.
He added that wind speeds are expected to ease slightly to around 25 knots on Monday.
The department also warned of sea conditions, noting that wave heights along Kenya’s coastline could exceed two meters between Friday and Sunday, before subsiding on Monday.

Dr. Gikungu urged residents in the affected counties to remain vigilant, warning that “the anticipated strong winds may cause damage to structures, including blowing off rooftops.”
Those involved in marine operations are especially advised to take caution, as “large waves may reduce visibility and disrupt marine activities over the weekend,” the weatherman added.
