The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) has adopted a groundbreaking resolution on the environmental sustainability of artificial intelligence (AI), with Kenya playing a central leadership role in what is being hailed as a historic global achievement.
The resolution — the first of its kind in the UN system — places the environmental impacts and opportunities of AI at the heart of global environmental governance. It marks a momentous shift in how nations approach rapidly advancing technologies, ensuring that environmental sustainability is integral to the future of AI development.
Kenya’s Decisive Leadership
Kenya’s Special Envoy on Technology, Ambassador Philip Thigo, spearheaded negotiations, guiding diverse Member States toward consensus on a complex and sensitive issue.
“Artificial intelligence will shape the planet as profoundly as it shapes economies,” he said following the adoption. “Africa cannot afford to be an observer in this transformation. We must shape an AI future that is sustainable, inclusive and grounded in environmental stewardship.”
Amb. Thigo applauded the broad support Kenya received from global partners including the European Union, the United Kingdom, the African Group of Member States, and Egypt, noting their unified commitment to ensuring that “voices from every region, including the Global South, are part of defining how intelligence serves people and the planet.”
Why the Resolution Matters
For the first time, the UN has formally examined the environmental footprint of AI systems — including their energy consumption, water use, mineral extraction demands, and pressure on land and ecosystems.
The resolution also recognizes AI’s immense potential to drive climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, natural resource management, and environmental protection.
A Win for Africa and Developing Nations
A central achievement of the UNEA-7 resolution is its empowerment of developing countries, especially in Africa, to take an active role in shaping global AI governance. It calls for:
- Greater access to high-quality, interoperable environmental data.
- Investments in developing sovereign AI capabilities.
- Strengthened scientific research under UNEP on AI’s environmental impacts.
This shift is critical for Africa, a continent deeply impacted by climate change but historically sidelined in global technological development. Kenya’s diplomacy ensures African priorities, from sustainable development to climate resilience are embedded in emerging global AI frameworks.
A More Inclusive Global Dialogue
Unlike exclusive settings such as the G7 and G20, UNEA provides a universal, democratic platform where every nation has an equal say. Kenya’s success in building consensus across geopolitical lines signals a transformative moment for global AI governance, one that centres equity, climate responsibility, and inclusivity.
Looking Ahead
The adoption of this resolution positions Kenya and Africa as trailblazers in the intersection of AI and environmental sustainability. It sets a precedent for linking technological innovation with environmental protection, climate action, and shared prosperity.
As AI continues to reshape societies and economies, this UNEA-7 milestone ensures future advancements will be guided by principles that protect the planet and promote global equity.
Kenya’s leadership at UNEA-7 is more than a diplomatic win, it is a defining moment for global cooperation and a call to action for nations to align AI innovation with environmental stewardship.
