Kenya has reaffirmed its position by hosting the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat’s Ratification Advocacy Mission in Nairobi.
The mission aims to advance the ratification of the five Phase II Protocols to the agreement establishing the AfCFTA, with the Assembly of Heads of State and Government’s decision calling on all State Parties to ratify the Protocols by 31 December 2026.
These protocols are designed to expand market access, protect innovation, promote fair competition and ensure inclusive participation of women, youth and Micro Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in continental trade.
Kenya was selected as the second country to host the advocacy mission, following its inaugural engagement in Ghana, recognizing its strategic leadership in advancing the AfCFTA agenda.
Being the member of the Committee of Heads of State and Government on AfCFTA Implementation, chaired by President William Ruto, was among the first nations to participate in trading under the AfCFTA Guided Trade Initiative.
Kenya has also championed regional ratification and implementation efforts, it being within the East African Community (EAC), has positioned itself as the leader of integration both nationally and regionally.
This meeting brought together senior government officials, policymakers and delegates from the AfCFTA Secretariat. They emphasized the importance of collaboration to ensure timely ratification and effective implementation of the protocols.
Delegations reaffirmed that Kenya’s leadership is critical in bridging policy commitments with practical trade outcomes. This will unlock African market of 1.4 billion people, while safeguarding creative and knowledge-based industries.
