Kenya and China are seeking to deepen their cooperation through major infrastructure projects and expanded trade opportunities aimed at improving connectivity, boosting exports and creating jobs.
Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi said his discussions with Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan focused on advancing transformative projects that could further strengthen economic ties between the two countries.
Among the projects discussed is the proposed extension of the Standard Gauge Railway from Narok through Kisumu to Malaba, as well as the dualling of the Rironi–Mau Summit–Malaba corridor.
Mudavadi said the investments would play a key role in unlocking trade, improving regional connectivity and creating employment opportunities for Kenyans.
“Kenya–China cooperation is moving from big infrastructure to bigger opportunities for our people,” Mudavadi said.
He noted that beyond infrastructure development, China’s continued opening of its market presents new opportunities for Kenyan farmers, manufacturers and entrepreneurs.
The expanded access, including duty-free entry for eligible Kenyan products, could provide local businesses with a stronger platform to reach China’s vast consumer market and increase Kenya’s exports.
The government is now looking to leverage improved transport infrastructure and expanded market access to strengthen trade links and promote economic growth.
“Better connectivity, bigger markets and more opportunities, that is the partnership we want to build,” Mudavadi said.
The renewed focus on infrastructure and trade signals Kenya’s intention to build on its long-standing relationship with China while pursuing projects and market opportunities expected to support businesses and communities across the country.
