Kenya and Japan have renewed their health partnership after a meeting between Health CS Aden Duale and Japan’s Minister of State for Health Care Policy, Minoru Kiuchi, on the sidelines of the TICAD 9 summit in Tokyo.
Kenya praised Japan’s support over the years, from training medical workers to helping fight infectious diseases and supplying new technology to hospitals. Much of the work has come through the Africa Health and Wellbeing Initiative, which is linked to universal health coverage.
The two countries now want to push cooperation further in areas such as health innovation, non-communicable diseases, climate change and sustainable financing.
Duale thanked the Japanese government for what he called a “steadfast partnership,” saying the cooperation has made a difference in hospitals and research centres back home.
He was joined at the meeting by Dr. Daniel Mwai, Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr. Patrick Amoth, the Director-General of Health, and Dr. Abdullahi Ali, Chair of KEMRI.
