Motorists in Nairobi should prepare for traffic disruption this Sunday after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced a temporary closure along a section of the Southern Bypass.
In a notice issued on May 5, KeNHA said the road closure will take effect on Sunday, May 10, to allow for the 2026 Nairobi Marathon.
The affected stretch will run between Ole Sereni Interchange and Lang’ata Road Interchange, and will be closed from 6am to 1pm.
“This road closure is to facilitate the 2026 Nairobi Marathon event to take place,” KeNHA said in the notice.
According to the official, the decision has been made to facilitate the smooth organization of the yearly race, which sees participation by thousands of people each year in the city.
In case of motorists used to using the Southern Bypass, they have been advised to seek other means through which they can access their destinations. KeNHA recommended the use of Mombasa Road (A8) for drivers coming from Ole Sereni Interchange and heading to Nyayo National Stadium Roundabout, where they can connect to Lang’ata Road.
However, the same officials advised all road users to assist the police officers and traffic marshals, who would be deployed along the areas, in controlling traffic.
Nairobi Marathon is one of the city’s most popular races organized in the city annually, involving both professionals and amateurs taking part in the races. The races involve races ranging from full marathons, half-marathon, 10 kilometres, and 5 kilometres races.
In recent years, the races have continued gaining popularity, with the use of important roads like the bypass and Nairobi Expressway and charitable purposes as well.
