The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has dismissed reports of inappropriate sugar being supplied in the country as misleading and unfounded.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the agency insisted that all sugar, whether locally produced or imported, is thoroughly screened, inspected, tested, and certified before being released to the market.

“KEBS remains committed to ensuring consumer safety. We urge Kenyans to ignore alarmist messages circulating on social media,” the statement read in part.

The clarification follows concerns raised by opposition leaders, who allege that a consignment of 25,000 metric tonnes of sugar previously declared unfit for human consumption has been sneaked into the country and is already being transported for repackaging.

Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, speaking on behalf of the leaders, claimed the sugar, which recently docked at the Port of Mombasa, is headed to a factory in Western Kenya, where it could soon end up on supermarket shelves.

“We are aware of a cargo of 25,000MT of sugar that landed in Mombasa. That sugar is already en route to a factory in Western Kenya, where it is to be repackaged and sold to unsuspecting Kenyans,” Kalonzo alleged.
