The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) fraternity came together on Thursday at Moi Air Base in Nairobi for a solemn memorial service to honour the ten officers who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Sindar, Elgeyo Marakwet County, exactly one year ago.

Among those remembered was the Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, General Francis Ogolla, whose death sent shockwaves across the nation. The ill-fated crash claimed the lives of nine other gallant officers who were hailed for their unwavering commitment, courage, and patriotic service to the nation.

Family members, friends, fellow servicemen, and dignitaries gathered at the Air Base to pay tribute, share memories, and reflect on the sacrifices made by the fallen heroes and heroines. The service was marked by emotional tributes, prayers, and a ceremonial wreath-laying to honour the lives and legacies of those who served Kenya with distinction.“Gone but not forgotten,” was a resounding message echoed throughout the ceremony, as speakers recounted the dedication and bravery of the officers.

Many described them as symbols of selfless service whose contributions remain etched not only in the hearts of their loved ones but also in the annals of Kenya’s military history.

General Ogolla, who had served in various key capacities within the military, was remembered as a visionary leader and patriot who inspired many with his humility and dedication to duty.The helicopter crash in April 2024 remains one of the most painful moments in Kenya’s military history, and Thursday’s memorial served as a moment of healing and remembrance for the nation.

As the KDF continues to uphold its mission of defending and protecting the country, the memories of the fallen officers live on — guiding and inspiring a new generation of servicemen and women.
