The Senate has upheld the impeachment of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
In the Tuesday, August 20, late-night contentions voting session, the senators voted to confirm all three charges against the governor.
In the first charge of gross violation of the constitution and other laws, 26 senators voted against Mwangaza. 14 senators abstained, while only four voted in her favour.
In the second charge of gross misconduct, 26 senators also voted in favour of her impeachment, two against, while 14 others abstained.
In the abuse of office third charge, 27 senators upheld it, 14 abstained while only one voted in her favour.
"Pursuant to Article 181 of the Constitution, Section 33 of County Government Act and Standing Order 86 of the Senate Standing Orders, the Senate has resolved to remove from office by impeachment Hon. Kawira Mwangaza, the Governor of Meru County and the governor accordingly ceases to hold office," Senate Speaker Amason Kingi ruled in finality.
Notably, the majority of senators who voted her out are allied to the ruling Kenya Kwanza government, while those who abstained are allied to the opposition parties.
Since her election in the August 2022 elections, this was Mwangaza’s third impeachment to reach the Senate.
Unlike the previous impeachments, this time around, Kawira fell short as the government rallied enough support to remove her from office.
