A long and complicated diplomatic endeavor, mostly managed by U.S. President Donald Trump, has finally resulted in a landmark peace agreement aimed at resolving the long-standing diplomatic rift and civil war in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The agreement, signed by Rwandan President Paul Kagame and his DRC counterpart Félix Tshisekedi, is a signal to the world that hostilities will be definitely stopped; non-state armed groups will be disarmed and returned to normal life; refugees will be supported more to facilitate their return home; perpetrators of atrocities will be brought to justice; and a new framework for economic growth will set the wheels turning in the region.

Kenyan President William Ruto, who was invited by President Trump to attend the signing ceremony, and who has also been instrumental in regional mediation efforts, described the agreement as “a key diplomatic breakthrough and an essential move towards a peaceful situation that prevails in the Great Lakes region.” He attributed the success of the talks to Trump’s decision to bring all parties together, saying that the U.S. leader’s unwavering commitment was the main factor that led to the breakthrough.

Besides the signing leaders, several other dignitaries were on hand to witness the historic moment. These included the Angolan President João Lourenço, the Burundi President’s Évariste Ndayishimiye, and the Togo’s Faure Gnassingbé among others. African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and representatives from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates were also present.

Kagame and Tshisekedi assured the public that they would take the accord to heart and carry it out to the letter. They commended Trump for his “on-the-spot and productive mediation”and said that the U.S. President’s engagement was “a major factor in bringing about the signing of the agreement”.

The event is regarded as a pivotal moment in the Great Lakes region of Africa where, notably, after many years of crisis, the signing of the accord signals the return of the prospects of stability, justice, and economic ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌progress.
