Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has held talks with leaders from Taita Taveta County in a renewed push to grow the mining sector while making sure local communities benefit.

The meeting brought together Governor Andrew Mwadime, Deputy Governor Christine Kilalo, Taveta MP John Bwire, Wundanyi MP Danson Mwashako, Kishushe MCA Newton Kifuso, and members of the Kishushe Ranch Managing Committee.

The leaders discussed how to unlock the county’s mineral wealth, with a focus on iron ore mining in Kishushe, one of the region’s key resources.

Joho said mining should not only be about extracting minerals but also about creating value locally.

“We want mining to bring real change to people’s lives — through jobs, business opportunities and better services,” he said.

He added that the government is committed to promoting local processing and value addition, which he said will help grow industries, boost the economy and create sustainable employment.

The CS was accompanied by senior officers from the State Department for Mining, led by Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai.

Joho said his ministry will continue working with county leaders to ensure mining is done responsibly and in a way that benefits both present and future generations.
