Kenyan students who finished Form Four have a chance to study in Japan after the government of Japan opened applications for its 2027 MEXT scholarship.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Embassy of Japan in Kenya, which said it is inviting applications from Kenyan students.
The scholarship, also known as MEXT, is open to different groups, including fresh KCSE leavers and those who want to pursue postgraduate studies.
To qualify, one must be a Kenyan citizen and have strong academic results.
For those applying for undergraduate studies, the embassy said a mean grade of A plain is required, with top grades in subjects like Mathematics, English and Kiswahili.
There are also other options for students who may not meet that level. Those applying for colleges of technology need at least a mean grade of A minus, while specialised training colleges require a minimum of B plain.
The programme also caters for postgraduate students, where applicants must have a good university degree.
Successful applicants will have their tuition fully paid, get air tickets to Japan and receive a monthly allowance to support their stay.
The embassy stated that prospective students need to get their application forms from the website “Study in Japan” and submit it along with other relevant documents.
Applications can be sent to the embassy in Upper Hill, Nairobi. Applications should reach the embassies on or before May 19, 2026, by 4:30 p.m.
