The National Treasury is awaiting Cabinet approval to begin settling pending bills amounting to Sh229 billion, as part of efforts to restore confidence and liquidity in the public procurement and service delivery sectors.
While delivering the 2025/2026 Budget Statement, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Hon. John Mbadi noted that the government had reviewed 65,625 claims valued at Sh571.6 billion, with the final report on verified claims expected by the end of June.
“We await Cabinet approval to settle Sh229 billion in eligible pending bills following a thorough review process,” said CS Mbadi. “This move will help unlock cash flow to businesses and ensure trust in government contracts.”
The review process is part of ongoing fiscal reforms aimed at improving public financial management, eliminating ghost claims, and ensuring that only legitimate debts are honored.
In addition to financial clean-up, the government is pushing forward on land reforms aimed at addressing historical injustices and promoting equitable land use.
“The government is committed to land reforms to address historical inequalities and promote equitable and sustainable land management,” the CS said.
To support this agenda, CS Mbadi proposed a budget allocation of KSh 3.8 billion to facilitate the settlement of the landless, reinforcing the administration’s pledge to pursue inclusive growth and social justice.
