Isaac Mutuma has officially taken over as the Governor of Meru County following the impeachment of his predecessor, Kawira Mwangaza.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at Mwendatu Grounds in Meru, just days after the High Court upheld the Senate’s decision to remove Mwangaza from office.

During his inaugural speech, Governor Mutuma assured Meru residents of improved service delivery, vowing to prioritize better healthcare services and youth empowerment.“I commit to working tirelessly for the people of Meru to ensure we achieve quality healthcare and create opportunities for the youth,” said Mutuma.

Mutuma, who previously served as Mwangaza’s deputy, takes office amid high expectations from the county’s residents. His administration is expected to address governance challenges that led to Mwangaza’s impeachment.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by key Meru leaders, including Senate Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi and former Governor Kiraitu Murungi. Their presence signified a new chapter for Meru’s leadership.

Mwangaza was impeached in December 2024, making history as the first Kenyan governor to be removed from office twice. The High Court recently upheld the Senate’s decision, clearing the way for Mutuma’s ascension to power.

As he assumes office, Mutuma faces the challenge of uniting Meru residents and delivering on his promises amid the political turbulence that has rocked the county’s leadership in recent months.
