Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has toured the volatile Transmara-Kisii border in a bid to find a lasting solution to the recent cross-border skirmishes that have disrupted peace in the region.
During his visit, Murkomen held joint peace meetings with residents and leaders, commending them for working closely with security teams to restore normalcy. He announced several measures to enhance security, including the operationalization of new administrative units, expansion of police posts along the border, and an increase in police officers.
To further bolster security, the government will deploy some of the 5,000 vehicles and motorcycles currently being procured to support police and National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) across the country. Additionally, the road along the border will be upgraded to improve trade and ensure quick access to security services.Reaffirming the government’s commitment to peace, Murkomen directed security personnel to arrest those involved in criminal activities and dismantle gangs operating in the region.
He also ordered chiefs to crack down on illicit alcohol and drugs, which he noted are contributing to insecurity and affecting the future of local youth. In a move to strengthen security at the grassroots level, Murkomen revealed that the government has developed a policy to recognize and support village elders, which is currently undergoing public participation.
This policy aims to enhance community policing efforts.Leaders from the two counties, led by National Assembly Majority Whip Silvanus Osoro and Kilgoris MP Julius Sunkuli, resolved to launch peace tournaments to unite communities and promote coexistence. They urged residents to uphold peace, emphasizing that the region has enjoyed harmony for over 20 years.
