The National Construction Authority (NCA) has issued a stern warning to contractors failing to comply with Kenya’s newly introduced building code, signaling the start of a nationwide inspection campaign to ensure adherence to updated construction standards.
The new National Building Code 2024, which came into effect on March 1, 2025, represents a major overhaul of Kenya’s construction regulations, replacing outdated provisions last revised in 1968. The code introduces modern safety requirements and stringent standards aimed at curbing the rise of unsafe structures and restoring order in the building sector.
Speaking during a high-level consultative meeting with deputy governors at Sawela Lodge in Naivasha, Public Works Principal Secretary Joel Arumonyang emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring full compliance with the new law.“The construction sector has long struggled with safety lapses and substandard work.
This code marks a turning point and we expect all contractors to fully comply,” said Arumonyang. The NCA announced that it will intensify site inspections across the country, working closely with county governments to monitor construction activities and enforce compliance. Contractors who fail to meet the new standards risk penalties, suspension, or revocation of their licenses.
Under the new code, builders are required to adopt up-to-date engineering practices, use certified professionals, and implement safety protocols designed to prevent structural failures and building collapses.
The government hopes the reforms will enhance public safety, promote quality construction, and attract investment into Kenya’s rapidly growing real estate and infrastructure sectors.
