Nairobi detectives have arrested Rita Akinyi Yohana, a house help accused of executing a daring theft from her employer before going into hiding.
The incident, reported on March 11, 2025, at Spring Valley Police Station, involved the theft of a safe containing valuable items, including family passports, foreign national IDs, $4,000, gold coins, Diwali statues, a pen drive, a hard disk, bank locker keys, perfumes, and other personal belongings

Investigators discovered that the safe, which had been securely screwed into a wardrobe, had been expertly removed.
Acting on forensic intelligence, detectives tracked Akinyi to her hideout in Kawangware’s Congo Maumau area, where she was arrested.
A search of her residence led to the recovery of several stolen items, including $2,900 in cash, assorted Indian Rupees, perfumes, and women’s purses, all linked to her employer.
Akinyi later admitted to dumping the ransacked safe in River Maumau. With the help of local divers, detectives retrieved it from the riverbed, though its contents were missing.
She is currently in police custody, pending arraignment, while the recovered items are being held as evidence
